Mathunny Mathews, popularly known as ‘Toyota’ Sunny, pillar of the Indian expatriate community in Kuwait for 6 decades, passed away at his residence in Qadisiya in Kuwait on Saturday, after battling ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). He was 81.

A deeply saddened Akshay Kumar, whose role in Airlift, Ranjit Katyal, took inspiration from Mathunny, took to Twitter to mourn his demise and wrote, “Extremely sad news, was an honour to portray him onscreen. Thoughts and prayers with his family 🙏🏻 #RIPSunnyMathew”

Nikkhil Advani tweeted, “The real #RanjitKatiyal lost his battle with ALS last night. 1,70,000 families pray for you. #RIPSunnyMathew @akshaykumar @RajaMenon”

Mathews had played a key role in the safe evacuation of 1.7 lac Indian nationals from the Emirate after Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait in 1990.

The funeral will be held later at his native Podippara, Eraviperoor in Pathanamthitta district in Kerala.
